What is the Purpose of the Walkabout?
The Walkabout provides a way to introduce the candidates to the people of the diocese. This is an opportunity for the candidates to see a sample of the churches and ministries that are representative of the life of this diocese. It is also an opportunity for the people of the diocese to meet and hear the candidates. The Walkabout is a part of the discernment process in which people of the diocese are asked to listen and prayerfully consider who it is that God is calling to be the 11th Bishop of Delaware. This is not intended to be a time to discuss issues, but rather a part of the discernment process for both those attending, and the candidates.

Who should attend the Walkabout?
All delegates and clergy who will be voting in the election on July 15 (22 & 23, if needed) should attend one of the Walkabout sessions. Other parishioners and non-voting clergy are also invited and encouraged to attend. Whether or not you are a voting delegate, this is your opportunity to meet and hear the candidates before the election. Walkabout sessions will begin promptly at the scheduled time, so please plan on arriving at least 30 minutes before the beginning of
the session.

What Should I Expect at the Walkabout?
The Walkabout session will begin with a brief gathering of all in attendance, and will include opening prayers, introductions, and instructions.

A moderator will use a script to proceed with the question and answer portion of the evening, as follows:

  • First, each candidate will be called upon to tell about himself/herself, returning to his/her seat when finished.
  • Next, each candidate will be called up in a random order (determined by the drawing of numbers each night), to answer the three questions they were given in advance — allowing four minutes per question. Those same three questions will be answered by all candidates and will remain the same for each session. These questions were chosen from the questions submitted to the Transition Committee.
  • Additionally, after those three questions have been answered, the candidate will draw two additional questions from the “hat” and will have two minutes per question to give spontaneous answers.

How do I Prepare for the Walkabout?

  • Read the nominees’ profiles and answers to written questions on the bishop search page of the diocesan website, www.dioceseofdelaware.net.
  • Their answers should give you some insight concerning how each nominee might lead the diocese.
  • Read Who We Are, What We Believe, and Who We Seek — found on the bishop search page of the diocesan website, www.dioceseofdelaware.net.
  • Pray for guidance.
  • Come to the Walkabouts with an open heart, and open mind. Allow your heart and mind to be open to guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Will the Sessions be Recorded?
Each Walkabout session will be recorded in its entirety and displayed on the bishop search page of the diocesan website, www.dioceseofdelaware.net.
