Daughters of the King

Learn how to start a chapter in your parish

by Robbie Burnett, Christ Church, Dover

As the program year draws to a close, women of Christ Church, Dover, are finishing their first year as the only active chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King (DOK) in Delaware. Their Holy Spirit Chapter of the organization was formally instituted on September 11, 2016.

Celebrating 130 years of prayer, service, and evangelism, the Daughters of the King is an order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church (as well as churches in communion with it and churches in the historic episcopate that are not in communion). Chapters are found throughout the United States as well as 21 international countries. Each member undertakes a Rule of Life by reaffirming the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation and dedicating herself to spreading Christ’s Kingdom and strengthening the spiritual life of her parish.

The members of the Holy Spirit Chapter are fulfilling their vows of prayer, service, and evangelism. The congregation is invited each Sunday to contact the Daughters for private, confidential prayers. Members also send monthly personal notes of prayer to parish families to lift them and their loved ones up with love and support. The chapter also offers to host “celebration of life” receptions following funeral services. During Lent, the DOK sponsored and provided food items (similar to a Seder meal) for the Women’s Day of Lenten Reflections offered by Deacon Patricia Malcolm, Chaplain of Holy Spirit Chapter.

The Daughters at Christ Church are looking forward to growing their chapter and will host an informational meeting in the fall. They also gather once a month for a business meeting and to pray and study. For instance, they are currently studying Rebecca Pippert’s book Out of the Salt Shaker & Into the World.

The Daughters of the Holy Spirit Chapter invites other Delaware women to learn more about the order and to consider starting their own chapters.
